We hear this question in every consultation: how many sessions will I actually need? The answer we give is 6 to 8, but that's a starting point, not a guarantee. The real number depends on the body area, hair color, skin tone, and hormone levels — and those variables shift the count significantly.
Here's what actually determines your number.
Why Multiple Sessions Are Required
Laser targets melanin in actively growing hair follicles. At any given moment, only 20 to 30 percent of your hair is in that active growth phase. The rest is dormant and invisible to the laser.
That's why we space sessions out. Each appointment catches the next wave of follicles as they wake up. You're not repeating the same treatment — you're systematically working through the full follicle population.
Session Count by Body Area
| Area | Typical Sessions | Spacing |
|---|---|---|
| Brazilian / Bikini | 6–8 | 4–6 weeks |
| Underarms | 5–7 | 4–6 weeks |
| Legs (half or full) | 7–9 | 6–8 weeks |
| Arms | 6–8 | 6–8 weeks |
| Face (upper lip, chin) | 8–10 | 4 weeks |
| Back / Chest | 6–8 | 6–8 weeks |
| Full body | 7–9 | 4–8 weeks by area |
Facial hair typically needs more sessions because hormones continuously stimulate regrowth. Legs need longer spacing because the hair growth cycle on the lower body moves slower.
What Changes Your Number
Hair color. Laser targets melanin. Dark brown and black hair absorbs the most energy and responds fastest. Blonde, red, and gray hair has minimal melanin — results are limited, and we'll tell you that during the consultation rather than booking a series you won't get results from.
Skin tone. Darker skin tones need lower settings to protect the skin from absorbing heat. This reduces per-session effectiveness and usually adds 1 to 2 sessions.
Hormones. Clients managing PCOS or active hormonal imbalances often need 10 or more sessions, plus maintenance every 6 to 12 months. We see this regularly and build it into the plan from the start.
Equipment. IPL devices are not true lasers — they produce inconsistent results and often require more sessions for the same outcome. Professional laser equipment delivers more precise energy, which means better results per session and fewer sessions overall. A study published in Lasers in Medical Science (August 2025) tested a rotational approach across multiple laser wavelengths and found 75.07% hair reduction at six months — confirming that equipment quality directly drives results.
What "Permanent" Actually Means
Laser hair removal is cleared for permanent hair reduction, not permanent elimination. For most clients, 80 to 90 percent of treated hair doesn't grow back. The remaining 10 to 20 percent returns finer and lighter.
After a complete series, most clients return once a year for a maintenance session. Some never come back at all.
Callista Pricing
At Callista in Jefferson Park, pricing is per session:
- Brazilian + Underarms: $149
- Half Legs + Brazilian: $189
- Full Body: $299
A full Brazilian + Underarms series of 7 sessions runs approximately $1,043 total.
How to Get the Most from Each Session
Shave 24 hours before your appointment, not the day of, and not with waxing or plucking. The laser needs the hair root inside the follicle to target it.
Avoid sun exposure for 2 weeks before and after. Tanned skin absorbs more laser energy and increases hyperpigmentation risk. This is why fall and winter are the preferred start months in Chicago.
Stay consistent with spacing. Skipping sessions or extending gaps significantly reduces cumulative results.
Disclose your medications. Retinoids, certain antibiotics, and acne medications affect how your skin responds to laser treatment.

Питання та відповіді
Can I see results after the first session?
Yes. Most clients see 20 to 30 percent reduction after session one. Hair that grows back is usually finer and slower to return.
Does laser work on blonde or gray hair?
Standard lasers have limited effectiveness on blonde, red, or gray hair because those colors contain little melanin. We'll tell you this honestly at the consultation rather than booking a series you won't see results from.
How far apart should sessions be?
4 to 6 weeks for facial areas and underarms. 6 to 8 weeks for legs, arms, and back, where the hair growth cycle is slower.
Does laser hurt?
Most clients describe it as a rubber band snap against the skin. Modern equipment with built-in cooling makes it tolerable without numbing for the majority of body areas.
