Why Diet and Exercise Don't Touch Certain Fat (And What Actually Does)

April 9, 2026 · 6 min read

If you've lost weight and still have the same dimpling on your thighs, or you've been consistent at the gym for a year and the lower abdomen looks the same, you're not doing something wrong. Cellulite is not a fat problem. It's a structural problem — and diet and exercise don't change structure.

VelaShape does. Here's the actual mechanism.

What cellulite is (and why exercise doesn't fix it)

Cellulite is caused by fibrous bands called septae that connect the skin to the deeper tissue. In women, these bands run vertically, and when the fat cells between them expand, the fat pushes up toward the skin while the bands pull down — creating the dimpled appearance. Men's septae run diagonally, which is why cellulite is far less common in them.

Exercise reduces fat cell volume, which can reduce cellulite severity. But it doesn't change the fibrous bands themselves. If the bands are thick and inelastic — which is genetic — you can be at a very low body fat percentage and still have visible cellulite. This is why athletes have it.

What VelaShape actually does to the tissue

VelaShape combines four mechanisms in one pass of the handpiece:

  • Infrared light: Heats the tissue to 40–42°C, increasing circulation and making the fat cells more metabolically active
  • Bi-polar radiofrequency: Heats deeper into the dermis, triggering new collagen production and causing fat cell membranes to become more permeable — releasing stored lipids for the lymphatic system to clear
  • Vacuum suction: Lifts the tissue into the handpiece, increasing blood flow and lymphatic drainage by 3–4x in the treated area
  • Mechanical rollers: Physically break up the thick fibrous septae that create the dimpling

The roller mechanism is what distinguishes this from treatments that only address fat volume. Breaking the septae removes the structural cause of the dimpling, not just the fat between them.

What the clinical results show

VelaShape III (the current generation) has FDA clearance for circumference reduction. In clinical trials, average circumference reduction after a course of treatment was 1–3 cm per area. Cellulite grade reduction (measured on the Nürnberger-Müller scale) showed improvement in 93% of subjects after 5 sessions.

Results continue improving for 4–6 weeks after the last session as collagen remodeling completes and the lymphatic system continues clearing the released lipids.

Who it works best for

VelaShape produces the best results in clients who are within 15–20 lbs of their healthy weight and want to address specific areas that don't respond to exercise — typically the outer thighs, inner thighs, abdomen, or buttocks. It is not a weight-loss treatment and is not cleared for use during pregnancy.

Clients with very loose skin (post-significant weight loss) benefit more from the radiofrequency skin-tightening component than the cellulite reduction. Both can be addressed in the same session.

Our April pairing: VelaShape + Pressotherapy

Pressotherapy uses pneumatic compression sleeves to actively push lymphatic fluid through the system — the same fluid that carries the lipids released during VelaShape. Doing pressotherapy immediately after a VelaShape session accelerates clearance of the released fat cells, which means faster visible results. This month we're offering both treatments together for $250, with a Detox Wrap included. Individually these would run $350+.

How many sessions to expect results

Skin texture and warmth improve after the first session. Measurable circumference reduction and cellulite grade improvement typically require 3–4 sessions. A full course of 6–8 sessions, spaced 1–2 weeks apart, produces the most significant and lasting change. Monthly maintenance after that. Frequently Asked Questions

Does VelaShape hurt?

Most clients describe it as a warm, firm massage. The vacuum suction and rollers are strong but not painful. The treatment area feels warm for a few hours afterward.

Are the results permanent?

The structural improvement to the septae is lasting. The fat cell volume reduction can return if you gain significant weight. Most clients maintain results with a session every 4–6 weeks after completing the initial course.

How is this different from CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting (cryolipolysis) freezes and kills fat cells — it's effective for fat reduction but does nothing for cellulite or skin tightening. VelaShape doesn't kill fat cells; it reduces their volume and addresses the fibrous structure causing cellulite. Different problems, different tools.

Can I work out on the day of my treatment?

Light activity is fine. We recommend avoiding intense exercise in the treated area for 24 hours, as the tissue is mildly inflamed during the initial healing response. Walking, stretching, and light cardio are all fine.
